Spain The death toll rises to 21 after two high-speed trains derail in Adamuz, Córdoba

Adif has reported the accident and provided a telephone number for the affected families. The Civil Guard has confirmed the deaths of several passengers and is working to assist and rescue the remaining victims. An Iryo long-distance train traveling from Málaga to Madrid's Puerta de Atocha station derailed in Adamuz (Córdoba), with two carriages overturning and spilling onto the adjacent track. This incident subsequently caused the derailment of another high-speed Alvia train traveling from Madrid to Huelva, which also left the tracks after braking in an emergency. At least 21 deaths and approximately 100 injuries have been reported so far, 25 of them serious.

The accident was initially reported by Adif in a brief statement released on social media. Authorities, emergency services, and railway officials have already arrived at the scene of the incident, which occurred shortly after the first train, carrying 317 people, began its journey.

On social media, several passengers have narrated the events in real time, including both images and videos from inside the carriages, where the lights went out and several windows were shattered. “Those of us in our carriage are okay, we don't know about those in the other carriages. There's smoke and they're asking for a doctor,” one user wrote in a post on X. The Civil Guard has confirmed at least ten deaths from the accident (two were traveling on the Iryo and three on the Alvia), something that passengers had also reported before the first official figures. One of them, RTVE journalist Salvador Jiménez, described how the impact of the accident felt “like an earthquake” inside the carriages. The number of people trapped in the overturned carriages is still unknown. This is how the accident happened

According to Renfe sources, the Iryo train derailed at approximately 7:45 p.m., “resulting in numerous injuries and fatalities.” Because it partially blocked the adjacent track, the Alvia train traveling on that line braked suddenly, with several carriages overturning after the collision. “Passengers are being evacuated through the windows onto the tracks,” they report. “The crew member is trapped in the cafeteria, unable to get out; firefighters and paramedics have been requested.”

With much information still unknown, the Government Delegate, Adolfo Molina, and the Deputy Government Delegate, Ana López, have already traveled to Aldamuz. The Emergency Services have deployed several mobile intensive care units, as well as a logistics support vehicle and four other critical care emergency units. The Red Cross has also activated resources to support those affected.

The province of Córdoba has prepared all its hospitals to treat the injured. In addition, other regions, such as Madrid, have also made healthcare centers and medical teams available to facilitate relief and medical care efforts.

Reactions after the accident

The Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente, also announced via X that he is at the Adif 24/7 Network Management Center (CGRH24) "following the information on the serious train accident." "I will keep you updated here with any new information that is confirmed," he stated. For his part, Juanma Moreno, president of the Andalusian Regional Government, also expressed his concern about the accident. “We are closely monitoring the situation of those affected by this incident.”

Furthermore, authorities have requested that anyone approaching the area wear reflective vests and use lighting equipment to ensure safety during the rescue efforts. With rail traffic between Madrid and Andalusia suspended, all trains that had already begun their journey have been redirected to their origin stations.

Adif has set up the telephone number 900101020 to assist the families of the victims of the train accident. Iryo, for its part, has the number 910 15 00 00.
