Horror on Ice: Deadly Shooting Shatters High School Hockey Game, Leaves Community in Shock

Mass Shooting at High School Hockey Game in Rhode Island Leaves Multiple Dead and Injured

PAWTUCKET, Rhode Island — A shooting erupted Monday afternoon at the Dennis M. Lynch Arena in Pawtucket during a high school ice hockey game between local teams, killing at least two people and injuring several others, authorities said.

The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. local time as spectators and players filled the rink for what was meant to be a routine scholastic sporting event involving multiple school teams. According to police, shots were fired in the stands near the spectators, prompting players and fans to take cover or flee.

Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves described the attack as a targeted incident that may have stemmed from a domestic dispute, rather than a random act of violence. Local reports indicate that members of the shooter’s family may have been among the victims, though police have not yet released specific details.

Emergency responders arrived rapidly, tending to the wounded and securing the scene. At least two victims were confirmed dead, including a young girl, and three others were critically injured and transported to local hospitals. Authorities also confirmed that the suspected gunman died at the scene from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound

Witnesses at the arena described chaotic scenes as the sound of gunfire reverberated. Some players initially mistook the shots for balloons popping before realizing the gravity of the situation. Families and community members were left in shock as authorities worked to reunite loved ones and account for all attendees.

Law enforcement agencies, including the Rhode Island State Police and federal partners such as the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), have joined the ongoing investigation. Officials said there is no broader threat to public safety at this time, and no additional suspects are being sought. (The tragedy has deeply affected the local community, highlighting once again concerns about gun violence even at community sporting events. Governor Dan McKee and Pawtucket Mayor Donald Grebien expressed condolences to the victims’ families and praised the swift response of first responders.
