Kabul — A series of powerful explosions shook the Afghan capital on Tuesday, heightening fears of a broader military confrontation between Afghanistan and Pakistan following renewed cross-border hostilities.
Residents across multiple districts of Kabul reported hearing loud detonations accompanied by the roar of fighter jets overhead. Videos circulating on social media showed plumes of smoke rising from the outskirts of the city, though authorities have yet to provide a comprehensive assessment of casualties or damage.
The escalation comes amid growing tensions along the disputed frontier between the two countries, where both sides have accused each other of harboring militant groups responsible for recent attacks. Military officials in Islamabad stated that targeted operations were conducted against what they described as “terror infrastructure” near the border. Afghan authorities, however, condemned the strikes as violations of sovereignty.
Security analysts warn that the exchange of fire marks one of the most serious flare-ups in recent months, raising concerns about regional stability. The border region has long been a flashpoint, complicated by militant activity, refugee flows, and longstanding political mistrust between Kabul and Islamabad.
Witnesses in Kabul described scenes of panic as explosions echoed through residential neighborhoods. “We heard multiple blasts and then jets flying low,” said one resident, who asked not to be identified. “People rushed indoors, unsure of what was happening.”
International observers have called for restraint, urging both governments to prevent further escalation. Diplomatic channels are reportedly active, though neither side has publicly indicated a willingness to de-escalate.
As the situation develops, uncertainty remains over whether the strikes signal a limited tactical exchange or the beginning of a broader confrontation. For now, Kabul remains tense, with security forces on high alert and civilians bracing for possible further unrest.
