White House Confirms Death of U.S. Citizen in Cuban Operation Against Florida Vessel
Washington — The White House confirmed that a U.S. citizen was killed during an operation carried out by authorities in Cuba against a vessel that had departed from Florida.
According to U.S. officials, the boat was intercepted in Cuban territorial waters. During the incident, at least one American national died, and several others were injured. The White House stated that it is seeking additional information from Havana regarding the circumstances surrounding the use of force.

Preliminary reports indicate that among the passengers aboard the speedboat were individuals holding K-1 visas — issued to foreign nationals engaged to U.S. citizens — as well as possible lawful permanent residents. U.S. authorities are working to verify the immigration status of those involved and to provide consular assistance to affected families.
A spokesperson for the administration described the situation as “deeply concerning” and said Washington expects a full and transparent explanation from Cuban officials. The State Department has also been in contact with relatives of the victims.
The incident threatens to further strain already fragile relations between the United States and Cuba, particularly amid broader tensions in the region. Human rights advocates have called for an independent investigation to determine whether the actions taken during the interception complied with international maritime standards.
As diplomatic communications continue, U.S. officials emphasized their commitment to protecting American citizens abroad and ensuring accountability where warranted.
