For its part, the Colombian Foreign Ministry confirmed, through its official X (formerly Twitter) account, that diplomatic efforts with the United States are progressing with a view to the next presidential meeting on February 3 in Washington.

This Thursday, Foreign Minister Rosa Yolanda Villavicencio Mapy and Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a telephone conversation that both parties described as "very positive."

During the conversation, Villavicencio Mapy emphasized that all the required protocol conditions for a head of state will be guaranteed for President Gustavo Petro's visit.

"He will be provided with all the guarantees befitting a visit by a head of state," the Foreign Minister stated in her official communication, underscoring the importance that both governments place on the meeting.

Rubio, for his part, stressed to the Colombian team the shared interest in the meeting concluding with concrete results. Both officials, according to the official report, "reaffirmed their desire for the meeting in Washington to be successful." Among the central topics that Petro and Donald Trump will address are the fight against transnational organized crime, with a special focus on border areas, regional security, and new opportunities for economic cooperation. The Colombian Foreign Minister praised the “long and historic trajectory of cooperation and joint work between Colombia and the United States.”

The phone call, according to official statements, also served to outline the agenda for the upcoming summit. Both Villavicencio Mapy and Rubio agreed on the importance of “valuing bilateral cooperation” and “building on previous achievements” to address shared challenges.

The atmosphere leading up to the summit is characterized by the expectation that the meeting will mark a new chapter in the strategic relationship between the two countries.

The recent meeting between Prosecutor Luz Adriana Camargo, DEA Director Terrance Cole, and the U.S. Chargé d'Affaires in Bogotá, John McNamara, represented a key step in strengthening cooperation between Colombia and the United States in the fight against drug trafficking and transnational crime, according to the U.S. Embassy.

The context of this meeting takes on greater significance due to the upcoming meeting between Presidents Gustavo Petro and Donald Trump in Washington, as well as the recent visit of the CIA director to Venezuela.

On the operational front, the United States has intensified actions such as bombing boats carrying cocaine in the Caribbean and the Pacific, in addition to resuming the fumigation of coca crops in Colombia using drones.

During the meeting, the appointment of the new director of the CTI (Technical Investigation Corps), José Luis Ramírez, a former police general and ally of U.S. authorities, was officially announced.

Authorities emphasized that they addressed the “need to strengthen cooperation between both countries in matters of security and justice,” focusing the agenda on combating drug trafficking groups, illegal arms trafficking, and the pursuit of criminal finances and currency counterfeiting.
