The court cites “lack of competence” and “lack of jurisdiction of the Spanish courts.”
The National High Court Prosecutor's Office has decided to dismiss the complaint filed against singer Julio Iglesias by two former employees for alleged sexual assault and human trafficking, after elDiario.es published a three-year investigation into these alleged crimes. The public prosecutor's office cites the “lack of jurisdiction of the Spanish courts and therefore the lack of competence of the National High Court Prosecutor's Office to conduct the pre-trial investigation of the reported events.” These events occurred in the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas, and Iglesias, who is currently 82 years old, “neither resides in Spain nor maintains his center of life, interests, or activity in this country,” despite owning real estate in Spain, as detailed by the aforementioned media outlet.
This Monday, Iglesias's defense attorney, José Antonio Choclán, requested to be included in the investigation proceedings and that the case be dismissed due to “the lack of Spanish jurisdiction to hear the case.” On Wednesday, he requested a copy of the complaint. And that is precisely what has happened. Although elDiario.es published the beginning of its investigation on January 12, the Prosecutor's Office had been investigating the case since the beginning of the month.
The two former employees, a housekeeper and a physiotherapist, who worked for him in 2021 at his homes in the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas, claim to have suffered unwanted touching, insults, and humiliation during their working hours, and they recounted this to elDiario.es in an investigation conducted in collaboration with Univision. The younger woman was 22 years old at the time, and Iglesias was 77.
