The president of United States, Donald Trump, said his administration is engaged in discussions with officials from Cuba and suggested that Washington could seek what he described as a “friendly takeover” of the island nation.

Speaking to reporters, Trump confirmed that contacts are underway with Cuban authorities, who are led by the country’s Communist government. He did not provide specific details about the scope or objectives of the talks but indicated that the conversations are part of a broader strategy to reshape U.S.-Cuba relations.

“We’ll see what happens,” Trump said. “Maybe we’ll have a friendly takeover of Cuba. A lot of people want to see change there.”

The remarks immediately drew attention in diplomatic and political circles, given the long and complicated history between Washington and Havana. The two countries have been at odds for more than six decades, dating back to the early years of the Cuban Revolution and the subsequent imposition of a U.S. trade embargo.

Relations briefly thawed during the administration of Barack Obama, who restored diplomatic ties and eased certain travel and trade restrictions. However, many of those measures were reversed after Trump took office, as his administration imposed new sanctions and tightened existing ones, citing human rights concerns and political repression on the island.

Analysts say Trump’s latest comments are open to interpretation. Some view the phrase “friendly takeover” as rhetorical flourish rather than a concrete policy proposal. Others suggest it may signal an attempt to negotiate economic or political concessions from Havana in exchange for sanctions relief.

Cuban officials have not publicly responded to the president’s remarks. It remains unclear whether the discussions referenced by Trump involve formal diplomatic negotiations or more limited channels of communication.

For now, observers say the statement underscores the unpredictable nature of U.S.-Cuba relations and raises fresh questions about the direction of American foreign policy in the Western Hemisphere.
