Washington State Hotline Error Gives Accented AI English Instead of Spanish
Residents calling a Washington state government hotline expecting assistance in Spanish have reported being served by an AI voice that speaks English with a Spanish accent, highlighting glitches in automated language systems.
The issue, first noted this week, occurs when callers press “2” for Spanish. Instead of receiving services in Spanish, they hear responses in English with an accent designed to mimic Spanish speech patterns. Officials say the problem stems from the AI-powered voice system implemented to handle high call volumes.
Many callers expressed frustration and confusion. “I pressed for Spanish, but it was English with a strange accent,” said one caller. “It’s hard to get help when you can’t understand what the AI is saying.”
Washington state authorities acknowledged the error and said they are working with the technology provider to implement a fix. A spokesperson stated that native Spanish-speaking operators remain available for urgent cases and encouraged callers to ask for a live representative if needed.
Technology experts warn that such errors, while sometimes humorous, can have serious consequences in public service hotlines, especially for emergency or health-related assistance. “Automated systems must be rigorously tested for accessibility and language accuracy,” said a linguistics specialist familiar with AI voice technology.
The incident has sparked debate about the reliance on AI in government services and the importance of ensuring that all residents, particularly non-English speakers, receive clear and accurate support.
Officials have not given a timeline for when the Spanish-language issue will be fully resolved but assure the public that a permanent correction is underway.
