The rescue of those trapped has concluded at the accident site, and the removal of the deceased is underway.

The derailment of the Iryo train near Adamuz (Córdoba) on Sunday afternoon has left at least 40 dead, according to the latest figures. Twelve people are hospitalized in intensive care: four at the Reina Sofía Hospital, two at the Red Cross Hospital, two at the San Juan de Dios Hospital, and two at the Quirón Hospital. The location of one more person is unknown.

The accident occurred before 8:00 p.m. An Iryo train, which had departed Málaga at 6:40 p.m. on Sunday bound for Madrid with 317 people on board, derailed its last three cars at 7:39 p.m. and crossed onto the adjacent track where another Renfe train was traveling to Huelva. This second Alvia train also derailed after performing an emergency stop. The causes of the accident are still unknown, and the Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente, has described it as “strange and difficult to explain.”

Puente made the statement alongside Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and the President of the Regional Government of Andalusia, Juanma Moreno, at approximately 2:30 p.m. this Monday, an hour later than planned, to provide an update on the train accident. The government has declared three days of mourning and has assured the public that they will “uncover the truth” about what happened.

The trains derailed in Adamuz have left the entire country in shock. The collision between the Alvia and the Iryo, which was traveling from Málaga to Madrid, resulted in 40 deaths and approximately 100 injuries, 29 of them serious. Several hours after the accident, on the morning of Monday, January 19, Ana García Aranda, a 29-year-old woman from Málaga, spoke to the media as she went to look for her dog, Boro.

The investigation into the train accident in Adamuz points to a track break, but it remains to be determined whether this is a "cause or consequence" of the derailment.

The Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, explained that this break could be the closest to the point where the derailment occurred, and the key question is whether it resulted from the accident or was the direct cause.

The Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente, emphasized that the investigation into the train accident in Adamuz (Córdoba) must clarify whether the break detected in a section of track is the origin of the tragedy or merely one of its consequences.

Iberia and Air Europa increase flights from Madrid to Malaga and Seville until Friday

Iberia has scheduled, from this Tuesday until Friday, one additional daily flight in each direction between Madrid and Seville and Madrid and Malaga, increasing capacity by 728 seats, 364 on each route. Air Europa will offer 360 more seats per day between Madrid and Malaga, also until Friday.

n total, there will be four daily flights in each direction between Madrid and Seville and three daily flights in each direction between Madrid and Malaga, increasing the seat capacity to 1,456 on the Seville route and 1,124 on the Malaga route.

Iberia has also increased the capacity of the aircraft operating the Seville route, switching from the A320 to the A321, which represents an additional 196 seats per day on this route.

Iberia has also announced that it will maintain price caps, limiting the maximum fare per leg on flights to Andalusia to €150 in economy class, to meet demand following the accident, “at least until Friday.”

Furthermore, Iberia has implemented a flexible policy for customers traveling from Andalusia to Madrid to connect with the airline's flights, allowing them to change their travel dates if they are unable to travel normally due to the disruption to the rail line.

On Monday, Iberia operated five flights on the Madrid-Seville route: the three regular flights plus two additional flights. Two more flights were also added to the Madrid-Malaga route, Iberia sources told EFE.

Meanwhile, Air Europa has added two flights to its Malaga route starting tomorrow and, for the time being, continuing until Friday. Operated with Boeing 737 aircraft, the airline will add 360 new seats per day, in addition to the regional flights it already operates to Malaga.

Furthermore, the bus company Alsa intends to increase its service between Granada and Madrid if it detects an increase in demand on this route, something it considers likely, according to company sources who spoke to EFE.

The industry association Confebus emphasized in a statement that bus companies are dedicating all necessary resources to meet the needs.

The government has expressed its condolences regarding the impact on people's mobility, as have other companies in the transport sector such as Adif, Renfe, Iberia, and Enaire. High-speed rail service between Madrid, Córdoba, Seville, Málaga, Huelva, Cádiz, Algeciras, and Granada will be suspended throughout the day on Monday following the Adamuz accident.
