The government of the United States described the death of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” as “a major development” for the security of Mexico, the United States, and Latin America.

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau publicly congratulated Mexican security forces for the operation that resulted in the killing of the leader of the Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG).

Landau described Oseguera Cervantes as “one of the most ruthless and bloodthirsty drug kingpins,” emphasizing that his organization played a central role in the expansion of methamphetamine and fentanyl trafficking into U.S. territory.

Bilateral Cooperation

Washington highlighted that the outcome reflects years of intelligence-sharing and security cooperation between both countries. The CJNG had been classified as one of the most violent criminal organizations in the Western Hemisphere, with operations extending across multiple Latin American countries.

U.S. authorities also recalled that a multimillion-dollar reward had been offered for information leading to Oseguera’s capture, due to charges related to drug trafficking and conspiracy to distribute narcotics in the United States.

Regional Impact

Officials in Washington noted that the fall of the CJNG leader could temporarily disrupt international drug trafficking networks. However, analysts warn that internal fragmentation within the cartel may trigger violent power struggles in Mexico and along key trafficking routes throughout the region.

The official statement reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to continue working alongside Mexico to combat transnational organized crime and curb the flow of synthetic drugs across North America.
