**WASHINGTON / TEHRAN, February 14 (IPU NEWS)** — United States President **Donald Trump** issued a harsh warning to the government of **Iran** on Saturday, promising **“very traumatic consequences”** if negotiations on the nuclear program fail and an agreement acceptable to Washington is not reached.

Trump stated that the United States is willing to activate a **“phase two”** of pressure, which would include **tougher measures and additional sanctions** if Tehran withdraws from the talks or does not agree to significantly limit its nuclear activities.

“If Iran does not comply with a fair and lasting agreement, there will be severe — very traumatic — consequences for its economy and its political system,” Trump said during a speech at the White House. "We are not playing games. This is a serious warning to those who seek to challenge global security."

Stalemate negotiations and diplomacy under pressure

Indirect negotiations between the United States and Iran, backed by European and regional mediators, have made limited progress since both countries agreed to resume dialogue earlier this year. The main point of contention remains the extent of restrictions on Iran's nuclear program and the conditions for lifting economic sanctions that have deeply affected Iran's economy.

Trump has insisted that any agreement must guarantee **rigorous and verifiable monitoring** of the Iranian program, as well as the limitation of both nuclear and ballistic missile activities. Washington has also pushed for Iran to end what Trump describes as support for armed groups in the Middle East, a demand that Tehran has rejected as unacceptable.

Reaction in Tehran and international allies

So far, Iranian authorities have responded cautiously, reiterating that Iran is willing to negotiate but will not accept conditions that compromise its sovereignty and legitimate nuclear rights under international treaties. Leaders in Tehran have emphasized that continuing to develop nuclear capabilities for civilian purposes is a recognized right, further complicating talks.

European allies, including Germany, France and the United Kingdom, have called for restraint on both sides and have offered to facilitate a framework that will allow progress towards a pact that reduces tensions and avoids a possible major confrontation.

Risk of escalation and geopolitical consequences

Analysts warn that Trump's rhetoric, combined with the possibility of tougher sanctions, increases the risk of geopolitical escalation in the Persian Gulf and in conflict areas where the United States and Iran have competing interests, such as Syria and Yemen. A failure in the negotiations could also impact global energy prices and disturb financial markets that are sensitive to stability in the region.

“The maximum pressure approach may deliver short-term results, but it also risks further isolating Iran and complicating any sustainable diplomatic solution,” said a Washington-based Middle East policy specialist.

### **Next steps**

US officials anticipate new rounds of dialogue in the coming weeks, although they have not specified dates or locations. Trump has emphasized that his administration is committed to a diplomatic solution “if possible,” but that the United States “will not shy away from tougher measures if necessary to protect its interests and international security.”
